Rifles, especially single shot rifles, make me laugh. Only the Marine's traits really remove a launcher's drawbacks and push its advantages harder. By the time you can field one as a regular weapon, most enemies are beefy enough to eat a couple rockets yet crumble under critical hit strings from other weapons. I think the only time I've ever willingly used a launcher is during Carnage runs. Several of the exotic shotguns are pretty cool and actually have unique mechanics the elephant gun's concussion effect in particular makes most enemies a non-threat. Not being able to miss and hitting multiple enemies per trigger pull are pretty great. Scouts can effectively snipe with them thanks to Eagle Eye and the way damage is calculated from range brackets.

I've only seen a couple exotic melee weapons and they were only a bit better than a generic chainsaw or katana. Yes, it is strong once it gets rolling, but a lot of the defining melee traits are Master Traits and good luck getting anything better than a basic knife before the second moon I think I've seen five pipe wrenches and crowbars on the first moon across all my playthroughs. On the harder difficulty settings, you'll often be dead before your melee build even gets off the ground. Many of the exotic pistols are also awesome (and found in the early-game), while I've only seen one UNIQUE rifle that was actually better than a generic one picked up from the ground.

Their firepower also comes up immediately upon encountering an enemy you don't need to waste time spinning them up, getting into optimal range (all the traits and/or mods can extend this range to the gun's max), or getting consecutive bursts (and SMGs actually get to double-dip for those traits!). Multiple perks exist that remove all the weaknesses of pistols immediately and push their advantages far past what another weapon could achieve Son Of A Gun on its own turns your starting pistol from useless to your best early-game option. When rolling Marine or Scout, a pair of dual-wielded revolvers or exotic pistols can get guaranteed, one-trigger critical splatters against late-game enemies. Pistol builds tend to perform much better than any other builds for pretty much every class, since so many more traits directly benefit them and all classes have pistol/SMG dedicated traits. So, after a bunch of runs with a few winning runs, I've gotten a feel for several different builds and the various traits.
